Item description: * See scans – perfect condition besides some slight aging problems to one of the ribbons. This is an extremely scarce and rare American Civil War medals group as awarded to a member of the Washington Artillery that was recruited Pottsville, Pennsylvania on April 15, 1861. The 1891 First Defenders medal is named to Musician Albert F. Bowen. The second medal is the Aluminum commemorative type that generally all First Defenders received later on. Both medals are LIFETIME GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC and came directly through descendents. A photocopy of a war pension record is also included. Only 127 members of the original First Defenders Washington Artillery had received this very special NAMED medal and so far only a handful of these examples are know to have survived in private collections and museums. The medal has a stylized image of the Capitol at its obverse and text surrounding it: FIRST IN DEFENCE OF THE CAPITOL – APRIL 18, 1861. The reverse is finely engraved and named to Albert F. Bowen along with following text: MEDAL OF HONOR PRESENTED BY THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA – WASHINGTON ARTILLERISTS. Underneath are added the names of the other four companies that made up all of the First Defenders, i.e. the NATIONAL LIGHT INF’Y, RINGOLD LIGHT ART’Y, LOGAN GUARDS and the ALLEN INFANTRY. This bimetal decoration medal or order is in the form of a stylized cross. The center is in circular form of what appears to be copper and surrounded by darker patinated metal. On top of ribbon there is a copper or brass clasp with embossed text FIRST DEFENDER. The cross is exactly 38mm across arms and 44.5mm tall along with the ribbon hook. The second commemorative aluminum medal has a diameter of 38mm and has embossed crossed rifles clasp attached to its ribbon. All American Price Guides and Catalogues on US / USA and Civil War medals and decorations place the 1891 NAMED Pennsylvania First Defenders Medal as being RARE and usually no price indications are given. We have to stress once more that this set is LIFETIME GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC CIVIL WAR FIRST DEFENDERS MEDAL GROUP. Absolutely scarce US American Civil War military / militaria collector set containing one of the rarest USA and American medals and decorations. The Washington Artillery was organized at Pottsville, in July, 1842, under Captain (since Brigadier General) James Nagle. At the breaking out of the Mexican war, its services were tendered to the Governor, and accepted. Its ranks being immediately recruited to the maximum number, it was, on the 15th of December, 1846, mustered into the service of the United States at Pittsburg, as company " B," 1st regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. Francis M. Wynkoop, hitherto a private in the ranks of the Artillerists, was elected Colonel of the regiment. Retiring from Mexico with thinned ranks, the company was mustered out, at Philadelphia, on the 27th of July, 1848, and the scarred veterans were received at Pottsville with honors befitting the brave. Cherishing 'esprit du corps', and proud of their history, the organization and drill of the company was studiously maintained, their ranks being continually recruited from the young men desirous of emulating their valor. On several occasions the company was called out to assist in quelling disturbances, which the civil authorities were unable to repress, and always performed this disagreeable duty in a manner to command the confidence and gratitude of all law abiding citizens.
